Brick Properties
Bricks vary depending
on raw material, method of forming and the degree of firing. As such,
brick's strength and freeze-thaw durability qualities vary. In the brick
standards, this variability is accommodated by establishing conformity
on one of three sets of criteria. These include:
1) Compressive strength, 24 hr cold water absorption and saturation coefficient
2) Compressive strength and low 24 hr cold water absorption
3) Compressive strength and freeze-thaw testing
Conformity to any of these sets is a good indication of the bricks' ability
to withstand internal stresses caused by freezing of moisture within its
body. When specifying a brick to be glazed it is recommended that the
clay body conform to any of the 3 sets of property requirements for class
exterior.
